Abstract
Soil microbial communities underpin nutrient cycling, yet comparative data from smallholder systems in the humid tropics remain limited. This study compares rhizosphere bacterial and fungal diversity across paired organically and inorganically fertilized maize plots over two growing seasons in Cross River State, Nigeria. Organic plots showed significantly higher fungal richness, while bacterial diversity did not differ meaningfully between treatments, suggesting fertilization type shapes microbial communities selectively rather than uniformly.
